Why do we have seven days in the week?
We have seven days in the week because the ancients thought we had seven planets, and each day was named after a planet. Well, that's according to Neil deGrasse Tyson in this short video.
Note that at the time they believed there were seven planets: Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, the Sun and the Moon. The Sun and Moon were considered planets from the Greek word meaning wanderer.
According to The names of the days of the week - origin and meaning, the Romans named their days of the week after the planets. The five real planets were also names of their gods. The Vikings then copied this practice.
English appears to have inherited most of its week day names from Norse, although there are exceptions.
Sunday: The Sun
Monday: The Moon
Tuesday: Named after the Viking god Tyr, the god of Justice and War. He is the Nordic equivalent of Mars.
Wednesday: Named after the Viking god Odin, also knows as Woden. Odin is most equivalent to the Roman god Mercury.
Thursday: Named after Thor, who because he deals with lightning and thunder, is equivalent to Jupiter.
Friday: Name after the Norse god Frigg, who like Venus, was the god of love.
Saturday: Saturn

Renouned Aboriginal Tracker Alexander Riley
Alexander (or Alec) Riley served with the NSW Police until his retirement in 1950 with the rank of sergeant.
I have read reports that Riley was once denied access to a property to search for a lost child because of the racism of the property's owner, the grandfather of the child. He later returned after the property owner had died and found the child's remains. I can't find the original report I read, but I have found mention of the incident in 'Tracker' Riley's great-great nephew revisits history with stage performance.
This also led me to information on two other renowned trackers, both called Jimmy James:

The passing of musical legends, and the musicians we love
On the 12th of June I woke to the news that Brian Wilson had died. Brian was a musical genius who created some of the 20th Century's greatest pop songs. His music enriched the lives of countless numbers of people, from fans to musical greats, and his death brought sadness to many. Virginia Trioli wrote a wonderful column God Only Knows Brian Wilson was a humble music fan, just like the rest of us describing how Brian was such a fan of other great musicians whilst himself inspiring generations of musicians: "about how much they loved his songs too, about how meaningful they have been in their lives as fans and musicians". Her writings inspired me to try to record my thoughts about another musician.
Later on the 12th of June I came across this video in my Facebook feed. It's Amanda Palmer and Antje Duvekot performing "Houdini's Box" as a tribute to Jill Sobule. That's when I learnt of Jill's death. Jill died in a house fire on the 1st of May.
But let's return to Brian for a moment. I'll be honest, when I heard of his death my initial reaction was surprise that he lived so long. Don't get me wrong, I love songs like "God Only Knows" and "Good Vibrations". But, his music wasn't part of the soundtrack of my life. I'm not young, I'm 60. By the time I started listening to music, Brian was well down the dark well of addiction and mental illness, and the Beach Boys were musical history. The only Beach Boys song to be a hit during my living memory was Kokomo, hardly a classic of the genre. Sure, I have "Pet Sounds" and it's a great album. But it's not something I've played countless times. I don't have an emotional connection to it. It's great music, but that's all it is to me. It was groundbreaking in it's time, but it's not part of my time.
Back to Jill. Jill was a working musician, not a star. In their tribute, Amanda talks about Jill's constant touring, crashing with a network of friends. She had a couple of minor hits in the 90s with "I Kissed a Girl" and "Supermodel". Her 1995 self titled album was never going to be on Rolling Stones greatest albums list. Yet, it's one of the most listened in my collection. For Jill was a storyteller, one who told stories through her songs. Songs like "Margaret" and "Karen by Night" told quirky tales whilst "Vrbana Bridge", about the traffic deaths of Admira Ismić and Boško Brkić on the Vrbanja bridge in Sarajevo, touched me deeply. Her more recent work includes songs like Island of Lost Things and the autobiographical musical "F*ck 7th Grade" (which according to the New York Times was "for the nerds who grew up to be the cool people").
It's fair to say that I noted Brian's death but I grieved when I found out that Jill had died.
Variety has listed a series of Jill Sobule tribute shows, dubbed "Jillith Fair", to be held around the US and featuring artists such as Amanda Palmer, Lisa Loeb, Margaret Cho and Tom Morello. Proceeds go to causes Jill supported. If you're brave enough to travel to the US in the next few months, perhaps you could catch one. If not, then you might enjoy "America Back"
Jill had A Good Life and will be deeply missed.

Trump - America's First Fox News President
This is something I've been thinking about for a while.
Donald Trump's primary news source appears to be Fox News. Not only that, but he appears to believe virtually everything they broadcast. I think that makes him unique amongst Presidents of the United States. He's also in their target demographic - a self entitled old white conservative male, quick to jump to conclusions, who sees things only in black and white and who, because of a distinct lack of curiosity, is profoundly ignorant about the world around him.
To quote CNN in Fox News takes pro-war position as MAGA media feuds over Israel-Iran conflict:
Carlson could have been alluding to the 79-year-old president, whose Fox fixation is so well-established that CEOs and foreign leaders jockey for airtime with the hopes that Trump will see their segment.
Trump is very much the product that Fox News sells to its advertisers.
That's why I call him America's first Fox News President.

Anti-Intellectuals on the Left
An interesting video by Nope Brigade on how Leftists Can Be Just As Anti-Intellectual as the Right.
This is from the video description:
If you have a critique of academia and academics, great. Me too. What is NOT a critique are simplistic sweeping statements based in reactivity, a profound lack of critical thinking and a refusal to navigate nuance. How is this any different from what the Right does??? At least they’re honest about outright hating experts and knowledge.

Sausage Rigatoni
Jasmin Weston's Sausage Rigatoni.
Ingredients
1 tbsp olive oil
6 pork sausages, skins removed (e.g. Italian-flavoured or fennel-flavoured pork sausages)
300-350g rigatoni or other pasta
2 tbsp tomato paste
handful of fresh whole basil leaves, plus extra finely sliced leaves to serve
150ml thickened cream
125g freshly grated parmesan
sea salt and freshly ground black pepper
Method
Boil a large pot of salted water, add pasta when boiling and cook until al dente. Reserve one cup of the pasta water before draining.
Heat the live oil in a fry pan over medium heat.
Break up the sausage meat and add to the pan
Once the sausage is about 2/3 done, add the tomato paste and cook, stirring constantly, for 1-2 minutes
Add the basil leaves, cream, and a large portion of the Parmesan. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Stir to combine.
Once the pasta is al dente, drain (don't forget to reserver one cup of the pasta water) and add to the pan
Use the pasta water a bit at a time to loosen the sauce to the required consistency. Use the parmesan to thicken if required.
Server topped with the remaining parmesan an sliced basil.
